French Matchboxes, 1950

Item — Box: CFC Matchboxes Box 2
Identifier: CFC2019.0126.1
Abstract

These are the first that I found, and they are those pictured first below. What a pleasure to see covers I had found in two other places now on their boxes. FG, TMCM, and "La Taupe et les Lapins" repeat from there. Strong new designs here include "La Belette Entrée dans un Grenier," FK, "Le Heron," and "Le Renard et le Bouc."

French Wooden Puzzle and Stacking Toy, 1980

Item — Box: CFC Wooden Toys Box 2
Identifier: CFC2021.0517.1
Abstract

Ingenious and delightful! I wonder if this is a "one-off" created just once. Or was it a manufactured toy made many times over? Ten "storeys" make up four different images. Watch out! Solving one side does not solve the others! Of course, getting the solution "wrong" makes for some surprising characters!

Frogs Who Asks for a King Dessert Plate, 1990

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 9
Identifier: CFC2019.0040.1.2
Abstract

This lovely set combines busy central images with a uniform "leaf, grape, and vine" decoration around each plate's border. They choose well when they put FC on the cover of the box. My second prize goes to "The Crow Trying to Imitate an Eagle." In both of these, the open spaces make reading the plate's central image easier and more enjoyable.

GA Werder, Nels, and Farine, 1910

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0132.1-5
Abstract Compare this set with Croissant's similar work on both MM and TH. Here, as in TH, children carry the roles. I believe that the set includes only five cards because the lines of the verse fable are all here, in perfect order. Notice the unusual way of placing the title on the first card: one part on the snow-covered roof over the doorway and the other on the door itself. The gestures and poses of the cicada are revealing, from making music, to asking with an open hand to begging with...

Gabutti French Pain Reliever Advertisements - 14 Cards, 1950

Item — Box: CFC Advertising Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0128.1-15
Abstract I find the artistry of these advertisements spectacular! Getting them has already set me on a quest to get the others in the set of 19 listed on the flyleaves of the envelope. There is plenty of humor in these illustrations! The advertisements seem to be for various products of Laboratoires M. De Rive in Paris. One of the two TH advertisements for Strongénol – the one with brown foreground rather than green -- was actually sent as a postcard, unfortunately without a clear date stamp. ...

Gangel: Two Fables of Florian Broadside, 1880

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0043.1
Abstract Lively reds and blues render these two fables. The second is among Florian's wittiest: the miser father deserves his smarter talkback son! What will this son become when he becomes the miser?! Because people tend not to know the plots, I will summarize them briefly here. In "The Child and the Looking-Glass," a child first smiles and then grimaces at a mirror, and gets angered by the grimaces he sees. His mother catches him in his rage. "If you smile, it will smile back. Whatever you...

Gibbs Dental Care Advertisement, Cat and Bird, 1929

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0076.1
Abstract Clever parodies of La Fontaine. "Le Chat et l'Oiseau" is a parody of WL: whatever explanations the little bird makes, the cat will eat the bird. GA is composed in particularly idiomatic slang verse, but I think it comes to something like this: a rogue having knocked about all summer comes to an old haunt and asks for a few rounds, offering only a brush in payment. The innkeeper asks what he did all summer and then responds that he can brush now. A barber snoozes and dreams that he has...

Gien Large Colored Wall Decoration, 1920

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 12
Identifier: CFC2019.0049.1
Abstract

A charming plate. It depicts the fall just after the tortoise has let go of the stick. The countryside is beautifully pictured, though the seller found it somewhat discolored with age. There is a string through two holes in the bottom rim of the plate. Apparently it was made from the start to adorn a wall rather than a table. Click on the image to see an enlarged version.

Glucalcium Clevenot by Forguet, 1960

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0002.1-4
Abstract

God Helps Those Who Help Themselves fable card, 1920

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0028
Abstract

The verso presents a story of Louis and Paul. One of them learns to raise his jacket as a signal to sailors of their need for help. La Fontaine, of course, quotes this saying as the last line of his fable on Hercules and the wagon-driver.

Gordinne: Fox and Stork Broadside, 1900

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0045.1
Abstract

Lovely presentation of the hunter and the cook, both of whom seem to know quite well what they are doing in the kitchen. Though the paper is fragile, the artistic accomplishment here is of very high quality! Catch the pose and attitude of the two characters in the second-to-last scene.

Grasshopper and Ant Keychain, 1950

Item — Box: CFC Artifact Box 18
Identifier: CFC2022.0065.1
Abstract

Here is another surprising keychain. The colored circular picture echoes Grandville. We might wonder whether it was printed and how.

Grondard, 1890

Item — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0264.1-8
Abstract These small portrait-formatted cards announce "Chocolat Grondard" at the top in red and run a red framing stripe around a colored illustration. The stripe also frames a few lines from the fable below and, generally, a reference to La Fontaine and the specific fable. Small italic print at the top of the illustration gives its French title. Small numerals in the lower right or left may identify a series or a date ("3 18," :4 v 3 c," "4 10," "5 2," "5 5," "5 9," and "5 17"). There is also a...

Gustave Guérin MM Pamphlet, 1898

Item — Box: CFC Advertising Box 1
Identifier: CFC2023.0034.1
Abstract

I long considered whether this is a book, a card, or an advertisement. In the end, the last seemed most appropriate. I have not discovered these chromolithographs on cards we have. Bertrand calls this printer rare. Inscribed 1898. 3½" x 5½".
